Epistle:  Romans 4:13-18
13 For the promise to Abraham and his offspring that he would be heir of the world did not come through the law but through the righteousness of faith.  14 For if it is the adherents of the law who are to be heirs, faith is null and the promise is void.  15 For the law brings wrath, but where there is no law there is no transgression.  16. That is why it depends on faith, in order that the promise may rest on grace and be guaranteed to all his offspring - not only to the adherent of the law but also to the one who shares the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,  17 as it is written, "I have made you the father of many nations" - in the presence of God in whom he believed, who gives life to the dead and calls into existence the things that do not exist.  18 In hope he believed against hope, that he should become the father of many nations, as he had been told, "So shall your offspring be."
Old Testament Reading: 2 Samuel 7:4-16 (ESV)
4 But that same night the word of the Lord came to Nathan,  5 "Go and tell my servant David, 'Thus says the Lord: Would you build me a house to dwell in?  6 I have not lived in a house since the day I brought up the people of Israel from Egypt to this day, but I have been moving about in a tent for  my dwelling.   7 In all places where I have moved with all the people of Israel, did I speak a word with any of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel saying, "Why have you not built me a house of cedar?"'  8 Now, therefore, thus you shall say to my servant David , 'Thus says the Lord of hosts, I took you from the pasture, from following the sheep, that you should be prince over my people Israel.  9 And I have been with you wherever you went and have cut off all your enemies from before you.  And I will make for you a great name, like the name of the great ones on the earth.  10 And I will appoint a place for my people Israel and will plant them, so that they may dwell in their own place and be disturbed no more.  And violent men shall afflict them no more, as formerly, 11 from the time that I appointed judges over my people Israel.  And I will give you rest from all your enemies.  Moreover, the Lord declares to you that the Lord will make you a house.  12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.  13 He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.  14 I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son.  When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with stripes of sons of men, 15 but my steadfast love will not depart from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before you.  16 And your house and your kingdom shall be sure forever before me.  Your throne shall be established forever.'"
Holy Gospel: Matthew 2:13-15, 19-23
13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you, for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him."  14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night and departed to Egypt 15 and remained there until the death of Herod.  This was to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt I called my son."
19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, "Rise, take the child and his mother and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead."  21 And he rose and took the child and his mother and went to the land of Israel.  22 But when he heard that Archelaus was reigning over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee.  23 And he went and lived in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled: "He shall be called a Nazarene."
